Air Fryer Taquitos (Frozen & Homemade)

CrispyAir Kitchen · Updated October 22, 2026 · Air fryer recipes with exact times & temperatures

The short answer: cook at 400°F (200°C) for about 9 min — Shells crisp and golden all over with no pale or soft panels, ends browned, filling steaming hot in the centre.

Frozen taquitos are the air fryer's easiest win — ten minutes from freezer to crisp — and homemade ones are nearly as fast once you know the two rules: warm tortillas bend, cold tortillas crack; and a seam only seals when it faces down. This page covers both, with the corn-versus-flour temperature split most recipes skip.

Ingredients

Method

  1. FROZEN — corn taquitos: preheat to 400°F (200°C). Arrange in a single layer SEAM-SIDE DOWN with a little space between. Spray lightly. Air fry 7–9 minutes, rolling them over at minute 5.
  2. FROZEN — flour taquitos (flautas): the same method at 380°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes. Flour browns faster and dries harder, so it gets the gentler heat.
  3. Check the centre of one: the filling should be steaming hot (165°F for meat fillings). If the shell is crisp but the middle is cool, drop 20°F and add 2 minutes.
  4. HOMEMADE: warm the corn tortillas wrapped in a damp paper towel in the microwave for 30–45 seconds — cold corn tortillas crack the second you roll them. This step is not optional.
  5. Mix the chicken, cheese, drained salsa, cream cheese and seasoning. Put 2 tablespoons along one side of each warm tortilla, roll TIGHTLY, secure with a toothpick, and rest seam-down for a minute — the seam seals as it settles.
  6. Air fry homemade taquitos at 400°F (200°C) for 8–10 minutes, turning once, until the shells are crisp and golden at the edges. Rest 1–2 minutes; the filling is very hot.
How you know it is done: Shells crisp and golden all over with no pale or soft panels, ends browned, filling steaming hot in the centre.

Tips that actually matter

Why this recipe works

A taquito is a seal problem. The seam seals where it meets heat — seam-side down against the basket — and unrolls the moment it faces up. Corn and flour tortillas then part ways: corn rewards 400 degrees, while flour scorches at the same heat and cooks 20 degrees gentler. For homemade ones the tortilla is the other seal problem: warm corn bends, cold corn cracks, and no filling survives a cracked shell.

Variations to try

Frozen food takes flavour best after cooking, while it is hot: toss fries in Cajun spice, garlic salt or grated Parmesan the second they land; glaze nuggets in Buffalo or honey-BBQ sauce; serve sticks and rings with marinara, ranch or garlic aioli.

What to serve with it

With sour cream, guacamole and salsa for dunking, plus a squeeze of lime over the whole tray.

Storage & reheating

Fridge 3 days. Reheat at 400°F (200°C) for 3–4 minutes. Uncooked homemade taquitos freeze 2 months on a tray, then bagged.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my taquitos unroll?
They went in seam-up, or homemade ones were rolled from cold tortillas. Warm the tortillas, roll tight, toothpick, and rest them seam-down before cooking.
Do I need to thaw frozen taquitos first?
No — they are built to cook from frozen. Thawing makes the shells soggy before they ever reach the basket.
How do I reheat leftover taquitos?
400°F (200°C) for 3–4 minutes brings the shell back. The microwave turns them to rubber.
